Skills assessment questions
Does every VET course qualify?
No. Your qualification must meet the visa study requirements and be closely related to an eligible nominated occupation. The occupation, rather than the course, must be on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Check the pathway before enrolling.
Working, studying and travelling
Subclass 485 holders can work without a limit on working hours, study full-time and travel outside Australia and return while their visa is valid. Eligible graduates who meet regional study and residence requirements may qualify for the Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream. A first subclass 485 visa is generally available only once as a primary applicant.
Which assessing authority should I use?
Use the designated authority for your nominated occupation. This may be Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) or VETASSESS. The required documents and assessment process depend on your occupation and pathway.
Is the assessment suitable for permanent migration?
A subclass 485 assessment may differ from a later skilled migration assessment. Eligible trade graduates may first obtain a TRA Provisional Skills Assessment, then complete the Job Ready Program for a later skilled visa assessment. The program generally involves at least 12 months of approved employment and its assessment stages. VETASSESS subclass 485 assessments consider qualifications; a full migration assessment also considers relevant employment.
Can I apply while my assessment is pending?
For the Post-Vocational Education Work Stream, provide evidence that you have applied for the relevant skills assessment when lodging your visa application. You can submit the successful outcome afterwards, before the visa is decided. Assessment processing does not extend your visa or application deadline.
